PHASES is a study of cyclical and symmetrical structures that are caused by various dimensions of polymetrics through repetition and layering. In a ping-pong-process between painting and rhythmical notation, optical phenomena are translated into music. The piece is laid out as a fractal: the rhythmic interferences that are happening between the single instruments of the line up are mirrored in the shifts between the different instrument sections marked by color coding: asian red, white, stone gray, lavender blue.
The form of the piece is designed through upscaling the foundation of the single voices, a polymetric phrase of several bars of length. This microscopic zooming technique is being applied using three different timing models: the conductor is being replaced by a metronome, before finally the ensemble takes the lead. Here, the principle of polymetrics works as a model of organizing different groups of (a) society. Who do we entrust with responsability and how are our own actions altered by that choice?
