With le temps, Katharina Ernst delivers a personal and subtle recording.
Classical styles of playing the drums are accompanied by the by use of sticks and instruments from traditional Korean music - those are rooted in old rituals of shamanism and animism, praising the weather and the harvest. The french word le temps signifies both, the time and the weather.
Clouds appear on the record cover as ultimate signs of change and transformation. The focus here lies on the multiple use of only few objects, celebrating the abundance of simplicity within the context of a dense solo drum composition.
"Ernst suggests five distinct, captivating and masterful rhythmic dramas and rituals, with impressive command and refined elegance. The opening ouverture___for hihat begins with a fast, acoustic techno-like groove, soon gravitating into an abstract, resonating vortex, and concludes in a playful and relaxed mode. vague___for snare, floor tom, bass drum and giant mallets is a disciplined ritual where Ernst drumming ebb and flow, coloring the meditative pulse with more nuances while patiently building the subtle, dramatic tension. Ernst employs the Korean thunder gongs on the brief brisé___for kwaenggari to offer a cartoonish, amusing cinematic soundscape. flux___for twelve shakers suggests a Steve Reich-ian methodical, minimalist progression through subtle variations, but with a provocative, enigmatic twist. The last début___for prepared drum kit and voice tells a detailed story about a wondrous and exotic train journey."
