"When Christina Kubisch and Katharina Ernst were introduced in 2016, two kindered spirits met. Both are active in Music as well as in the field of Fine Arts. Undercurrents was made, the first piece for drums and electromagnetic sounds, composed by Kubisch. In the early 2000s, she developed special headphones with integrated induction coils, which attract electromagnetic fields and make them audible through amplification and speakers.

Commissioned by musikprotokoll, the artsts have now developed a second piece, Interference, where a beta version of BeatSeeker in Ableton Live is applied. Not the playback track of Kubischs electromagnetic sounds of various kinds of security barriers, but Ernsts drumming is directing the rhythm. The human is controlling the machine, not the other way round."

Interference by Katharina Ernst is a piece about different rhythmical structures controlling each other. Christinas recordings of electromagnetic waves of all kinds such as security barriers, light advertisings and server rooms from Bangkok to NYC, from Berlin to Shanghai are ruling over the drums in the first part, while the old dependency on metronomic forms is questioned in the second part and develops into a revolutionary reversion of the roles in the third and last part: no longer does the playback track control the drummer, no longer is the machine setting the mood.

A human timing is re-established, the computer seems to become a band member that is listening and adapting, and while Christina is detecting electromagnetic fields live on stage with her specially developed technology that translates electromagnetic waves into audio waves, Katharina is bending the possibilities of following and being followed by BeatSeeker.
